Top 5 Herbal Remedies for Bruising in Children

Herbal remedies have been used for gentle healing for thousands of years. They are perfect for children, since medication can be harmful due to side effects. The Greeks and Romans already knew about the healing properties of certain plants. In the Middle Ages, scholars were studying about medicinal plants in the monasteries.

There are herbs and medicinal plants that can be used for helping children’s bruises to heal.

What is a Bruise? Medically speaking, a bruise is caused by a blunt trauma where the skin is not severed, but the swelling or pain remains. When blood vessels are torn, it bleeds inwardly into the intercellular spaces, and your child will get a bruise (hematoma).

If your child is injured, you should take him or her to see a doctor unless the bruises are minor. In any case, you can use natural remedies to accelerate the healing process.

How to treat a bruise?
Before you start using plant medicines, it is important to cool the area of bruising on your child. You can apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables. Wrap these in a cloth or towel to protect your child’s skin from freezing. Or you can use a cool spray. It is important that you don’t cool the affected area for more than half an hour.

Then after this step you can start using herbal remedies to accelerate the healing.

  • Comfrey:  Use the leaves of comfrey for making a compress and apply it on the bruises. This helps to reduce swelling, inflammation and pain from the bruises, along with effectively speeding the healing process.
  • Mille folium: This herbal remedy can be used especially when the bruising is followed by persistent bleeding. This remedy is also used for bleeding in the nose and other parts of the body.
  • Arnica: This is a wonderful herbal remedy for bruises because it has useful anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and pain-relieving properties that help in healing the wounds. Add a few drops of arnica into a cup of water and mix it well. Soak a clean cotton cloth in the solution and bandage the area with this cloth.
  • Cayenne pepper:  Add one part of cayenne pepper to 5 parts of melted petroleum jelly. Thoroughly mix them and allow it to cool. Use this mixture daily, applying it to the bruise.
  • Parsley: This is a common garden herb which is rich in therapeutic properties and vitamins. It helps to shrink the small blood vessels and is also helpful in treating cuts. Take a handful of this herb, crush it, and apply to the bruised area. Regularly repeat the process with fresh parsley. This will help to clear up all the black and blue areas within a few days.

These are the top 5 herbal remedies for bruising in children. Some drugstores offer different products made from these herbs. You can especially find different arnica products such as creams, pills, spray and oils. Applying products like that is probably easier than making mixtures yourself. So talk to your doctor or pharmacist about different products. Be sure to only use them as labeled.

If in doubt about how to best treat your child’s injury, consult a doctor.
