Leukemia is referred to as white blood cells cancer. The child with leukemia has abnormal white blood cells which are produced within the bone marrow. These abnormalities shows various signs and symptoms in patients with leukemia. In this article, there is a brief discussion of signs and symptoms of leukemia disease in children.
Signs and symptoms of leukemia in children
Some of the common signs and symptoms of leukemia in children are discussed below:
- Fever: Kids develop fever frequently because the infection-fighting cells (white blood cells) become deficient.
- Infections: Children become susceptible to infections, because of deficit in white blood cells.
- Anemia: One may become anemic as leukemia affects the red blood cells production. This reduces the oxygen carrying capacity.
- Shortness of breath: Due to the anemic condition, kids tend to develop shortness of breath either while playing or exercising.
- Appear pale and become tired: One may easily get tired and can appear pale due to the anemic condition.
- Bruise and bleeding for long time: When a kid with leukemia disease gets a minor injury then the bleeding process continues for a long time. This is because of the disease which destroys the ability of the bone marrow to produce platelets which are helpful in blood clot formation.
- Nose bleeding: One may experience frequent nose bleeding due to the disease.
Some other signs and symptoms of leukemia disease include:
- Poor appetite: Kids may develop poor appetite.
- Abnormally tired feeling: Children with leukemia may develop abnormally tired feeling
- Swollen glands: One can develop swollen glands in the groin or in the neck
- Pain: One may experience pain in the joints or bones, which can cause faltering walk.
If the leukemia spreads to the brain, then the kids develop various other symptoms which include:
- Headaches
- Seizures
- Abnormal vision
- Balance problems
These are some of the common signs and symptoms of leukemia disease in children. Thus, consult a doctor and follow the prescription for your child.
