Soy beans and soy products may have been promoted as a healthy food and alternative protein with several health benefits. But a recent study has proved that soy products are inappropriate for infants and kids.

The proven unfavorable health effect of soy on children overshadows any philosophical or positive reasons to eat soy products.

A huge list of problems, hormone dysfunction and diseases are linked up, by consuming soy products by children including thyroid disease, mineral mal-absorption, diabetes, and abnormal sexual development.

Problems with soy

Here are few facts on ‘why should you not feed soy products to your children’. Soy foods disturb thyroid function, and a depressed thyroid gland is capable of inducing an autoimmune thyroid disease, goiter and hypothyroid condition. Soybeans include compounds that restrain thyroid peroxidase – catalyzed responses that are necessary for the production of thyroid hormone.

Soy formula feeding in kids/infants can lead to thyroid disease. A study conducted (Fort, 1997) proved that, children fed with higher frequency of soy formula in infancy, were later resulted in autoimmune thyroid disease. Where as their siblings or other children, who did not consume soy products were disease free.

Soy feeding in infants is also associated with diabetes. When analyzed about the past feeding records of 95 diabetic children. It was found that, the number of children with diabetes, consumed soy formula in infancy is twice the number, when compared to children in the control group (Fort, 1986).

The American Academy of Pediatrics has strictly advised against the use of soy formula due to the diabetes risk (AAP, 1994).
