Wages: Communicate right what wages you are going to offer. Make sure you tell the nanny what her take-home will be, after deducting the taxes. Give her the right compensation according to the market. Otherwise, she might leave for a better paying job.

Expectations: Tell the nanny before hiring what exactly your expectations are. Tell her what chores you expect from the nanny around the house.

Work hours: Be clear on the work hours. Even though a nanny is expected to be there whenever you need her, even she needs some time off.

Write up a work agreement: Do not hire a nanny without a written work agreement. Have a detailed work agreement with all the expectations.

Discuss how the child is to be handled: You may be having ideas about how your child is to be disciplined. The nanny may be having different ideas. Be sure you discuss with and agree on how to handle your child.

Holidays and vacations:
The nanny also needs to take some time off from work. Also, when you go on a vacation, you may have to pay the nanny. Clarify all these issues.

Provide training to the nanny: You need to orient the nanny about how the family runs and what the customs are. This might take some time.

Last but most important, let your children interact with the nanny for some time before hiring. Your child spends the most time with the nanny. It is imperative that they should like the nanny.
