Rabies is an infectious viral disease caused by rabies virus. It affects the nervous system of the humans and mammals. Rabies spread through the bite of animal with rabies (a rabid animal). Wild animals like racoons, skunks, fox, coyote or bat can have rabies and transmit it to people.
Most bats do not carry rabies. Incidence of bat and rabies is low. Nevertheless, a rabid bat can transmit rabies to the victim. One cannot recognize whether the bat is rabid just by seeing. It should be confirmed in laboratory.
Generally one gets to know when bitten by bat. But sometimes the bat-bite is invisible. If you find a bat in your home after getting up from sleep, consult physician to know the bite and rabies infection.
Is there a Cure for Rabies? – Treatment for Rabies:
There is no cure for rabies and once the symptoms become manifesting in the victim death is almost certain.
However, if the symptoms are not yet manifested there is extremely effective post-exposure treatment, which includes an injection of rabies immune globulin and several doses of rabies vaccine given over a 28-day period. Rabies immune globulin and the first dose of the vaccine are administered immediately after the exposure. Normally, additional doses of rabies vaccine follow on days 3, 7, 14, and 28 after the first vaccination.
