Tips to Manage Hypertension in Kids

Most of us know that adults suffer from high blood pressure or hypertension. However, children can have hypertension too and they should be treated immediately to prevent further complications. The American Heart Association recommends children from 3 years and up to have yearly blood pressure check.

What Causes Hypertension in Children?
Hypertension in kids can be caused by several factors. Here are the common factors which result in hypertension:

Premature babies and babies with low birth weight also tend to have hypertension. In teens and young adults, oral contraceptives can cause hypertension. The biggest culprit for the cause of hypertension in teens is obesity.

Symptoms of Hypertension in Children:
The following are the symptoms of hypertension in kids:

High blood pressure can result in damage to heart, eyes, and brain. Hence, it should be diagnosed and treated early. This will enable the child to lead a normal life.

Diagnosing Hypertension in Kids:
The normal blood pressure in kids is determined based on their age, height, weight etc. The doctor, while measuring blood pressure, would be taking 3 or more blood pressure readings. This is because,  if the child is anxious while measuring the blood pressure, the reading can be higher.

Treating Hypertension in Kids:
Here are a few ways in which hypertension in kids is treated:

About 3% of kids suffer from high blood pressure. High blood pressure if recongnized early , can be controlled and treated successfully. Hence, it is important for parents to get their kids checked and treated for hypertension.
