Child car seats are important for the safety of your child. Many kids are killed in auto accidents due lack of safety measures. When a child car seat is properly installed, the risk of injury or death is reduced by 71%.
Tips to Choose Child Car Seats:
Here are a few tips while choosing the child’s car safety seat:
- An expensive child car seat may seem like the best one to go for. However, the best child car seat is the one which fits your child’s weight, height, age, size and the type of your vehicle
- Check for the manufacturer’s date, expiration date, model no. etc. while buying a new child car seat or while accepting an old one
- Be careful while accepting a used car seat. A used car seat should not be older than 6 years. Also check for the wear and tear. If you feel the child car seat is not structurally sound, go for a new one
Before installing the child car safety seat, read the user’s manual and instruction. About 80% of the child car seats are improperly installed
Types of Child Car Seats:
Here are the different types of child car seats. All the following seats are required to be placed at the back seat of the car:
- Babies up to 1 year: Babies up to 1 year or 20 pounds are to be placed in rear-facing car seats (at the back seat of the car). The baby should fit in the car seat correctly; otherwise the baby may slip out
- Toddlers (20 to 40 pounds): Toddlers (20 to 40 pounds) are to be placed in forward-facing child car seats, at the back seat
- Children (40 to 80 pounds): Children (40 to 80 pounds) or of height 150 cm (4 feet 9 inches) should be placed in a booster seat. Booster seats are for those kids who have outgrown the child car seats, but cannot be restrained by seat belts
Kids of age 12 years or younger are required to ride in the back seat. This is because the air bags which are deployed during accidents are meant to protect adults. If your child has outgrown the car seats and booster seats, make sure he/she always wears a seat belt
