The United Nations has favored the strengthening of laws to prevent child trafficking in South Asia. Many children who are at risk are undocumented migrants, unaccompanied minors or juvenile delinquents.
Lena Karisson, child protection specialist, UNICEF while releasing a report on Preventing and Responding to Child Trafficking in South Asia said that “child trafficking is a neglected form of human trafficking.”
South Asian Governments have no doubt developed plans of action at the national level. These Governments have also adopted laws that criminalize trafficking. The legal framework needs to be strengthened in order to prevent trafficking and to help affected children legally and psychologically.
Trafficking of South Asian children is carried out as part of sexual exploitation such as sex tourism, child pornography, prostitution, labor exploitation in industries and agriculture and paedophilia.
The report favors making judicial process child-friendly, protecting the psychological well being of the children and their privacy. More awareness is there among adolescents about trafficking and remedial measures. Many girls who are vulnerable to trafficking have been demanding right to education and livelihood.
