Parents have a major responsibility in bringing up a child. Both the mother and father play an important role in ensuring the child is well brought up, both physically and mentally. Generally, the child spends more time with the mother since birth as he or she has to be fed, but the father also shares the responsibility with the mother in childcare. What is the role of the father in bringing up a child and ensuring his or her well-being?
Role of Father in Childcare
- A father’s love and affection is very important for the child’s mental growth. The child feels reassured if both the parents shower their affection on him or her. If the father figure is not good as they say in psychological terms, then the child will be maladjusted in society and suffer from perversions
- A child emulates his or her father in many ways. The child observes the behavior of the father, accepts his belief system and adopts them. A healthy “father-figure” can do wonders for the mental development of the child.
- A child likes to spend time with the father and enjoys his or her company as a sense of belonging is experienced. An interactive father, who plays games with the child and listens to his or her woes and guides him or her in her daily tribulations is an asset to the overall well-being of the family.
- In psychological parlance there is a strong link between a father’s love and delinquency.
- The child’s positive self-esteem depends upon the father’s physical affection and support.
- A father needs to take time out from his busy schedule and spend time with his child. A child should not feel neglected due to lack of attention.
- A father is in a position to provide guidance as well discipline the child.
- A doting father will read to his child bedtime stories. This will bring him closer to the child.
- A responsible father will also take interest in the school activities of the child.
- Some household chores performed by the father can be shared with the child. The latter will also develop a sense of responsibility and realize the importance of being involved in household activities.
A child definitely needs his or her father. A healthy child needs the love and affection as well as the emotional and physical support of the father. The father, along with the mother, has a major role to play in the upbringing of the child.
