A child spends most of his or her time with the mother, as the latter nurtures him or her. Whatever the mother communicates, the child tries to understand. The language spoken by the mother plays an important role in the child’s life, as he or she grows up learning it. The mother tongue is what the child gets familiar with and finds easy to understand and speak eventually. How does the mother tongue influence the child?
Why Mother tongue is Important for the Child?
- It links the child with the culture of the society he or she is growing up in
- The child learns much from his or her parents
- Social norms and social practices are conveyed through the mother tongue
- It strengthens the bond between the mother and the child
- It creates a sense of belonging to a particular country or region
- A child’s psychological grooming will depend upon what has been conveyed through the mother tongue
- The child’s personality is laid through the mother tongue
- Sociability of a child is enhanced by the child’s adeptness in speaking his or her mother tongue
- The child will be better equipped to learn his or her mother tongue well as he or she is exposed to it since childhood. In other words, the child will have a command over the language spoken to him or her during childhood
- The ability to converse in a language is developed through the mother tongue. The child will get familiarized with the nuances of a language, how to learn it and use it. This enables him or her to learn other languages as well
A mother can convey her feelings for the child through a language spoken by her. A child in turn learns the language and imbibes all the social and cultural values through this medium of communication. In other words, mother tongue plays a pivotal role in grooming the child.
