A well-behaved child is admired by all and sundry. He or she is appreciated at school, among the peer group and grows up to be a gentleman or a lady. Parents should teach their child how to converse in public, how to behave with others and what to say and how to say it.
A polite and courteous behavior in a child can do wonders. Such behavior can draw much attention towards the child. Others will seek his or her company. How does a parent cultivate manners in his or her child?
Tips for Children Manners
- Children should learn not to interrupt others. They should wait for their turn before speaking to someone. It is bad manners to speak when someone else is doing so. When their turn does come, give full attention to them so that they feel reassured that you do feel their presence.
- Should learn to greet others. It could be either a formal or informal greeting. With adults they could shake hands, whereas with other children a hello or hi would do.
- They should learn to say “Thank You” and “Please”. It indicates their respect for others as well appreciation. “ Your Welcome” can be said after they are thanked. This is a sign of being courteous.
- Accept compliments courteously. Appreciate when being complimented. They must graciously say thank you when someone greets them.
- Children should develop sportsmanship.
- Cleaning up the place after leaving. Removing the “mess” created by them makes a parent very happy.
- Opening doors when others are entering. When ahead of someone, do not let the door slam on his or her face.
- Respect others viewpoint. A child should be made to realize that there are differences between individuals.
- The child should learn to apologize when it is his or her fault. Saying “sorry” indicates the respect and concern shown to the offended person.
- Table manners are very essential. A child should know how to conduct himself or herself at social gatherings, whether at home or elsewhere.
Manners are very essential to maintain social etiquette. A child who is well-behaved now will reap benefits in adulthood. Parents have to shoulder the responsibility to teach their children how to interact with others. After all, we are all social beings and have to live harmoniously with each other.
