Parents often face the problem of tackling bullies at school. Their child may be facing serious problems to the extent of not being able to concentrate on studies. After all, a bully at school can disrupt studies and physically and mentally torture a child. Bullying can also take place at home. An older child may bully a younger child. A parent needs to tackle this situation well or else the bullied person may face psychological problems. What should a parent do to prevent a bully from being a nuisance at home and school?
Tips to Tackle a Bully
- The parents should ensure that rules to contain bullying are enforced strictly
- The victims should be free to talk to parents and teachers about the bully
- Supervision in the class as well as in the school premises should be improved upon. There should be adequate adult supervision
- Through role- play and storytelling, one could explain why bullies behave in that fashion. The victim’s feelings can be highlighted
- The relationship between the teacher and the student should be improved upon
- One should ensure that such behaviors are not permitted in schools
- Regular staff meetings should be held between teacher and administration
- The victim should build his or her self-esteem
- Create one’s own ‘power pack’
- One should develop a support network
- The child should not carry large amounts of money
- The child should stay where most people are. A bully does not like witnesses around
- The child should not brag that he or she has expensive electronic gadgets
- When using public transport, the child should sit near adults
- The child should remain calm while being bullied. Bullies like their victims to react
- One must not argue or start a discussion with the bully. Just say “Yes” or “No” or “Leave me alone”
- One must try to remember as much as possible about the bully, his or her age, height, clothes and color of the hair etc
Coping up with Bullying
- One should share the experience with a well-wisher. The situation can get worse, if one does not talk about it
- One should not tackle the bully on one’s own
- It is better to tackle the problem as soon as possible
Bullying is a problem that one comes across in several situations. In schools, weak students are often bullied. It is better to seek peer group cooperation as well as that of the authorities to deal with a bully. After all, why bear the awful and obnoxious behavior of the bully.
