An exceptional child is different from the normal child. One should identify the exceptional child and accordingly behave with him. An exceptional child has physical disabilities, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, learning disabilities as well as mental retardation. He or she requires special attention in order to attain full potentialities. What should parents do to ensure that their child with special needs is well taken care of?
Tips to Handle Child With Special Needs
- A child with special needs requires a lot of patience and understanding. Parents should be willing to spend adequate time with him or her. They must not feel that the child is a burden on them. A child who is sensitive may feel rejected if the parents feel the strain of taking care of him and show their discomfort
- Families have to adjust to this child of special needs. Often parents may feel disappointed initially on giving birth to an exceptional child. They should accept the child with open arms and give their best to him or her. The exceptional child should feel close to the family
- Parents should learn to tolerate them and not express their displeasure in handling a child, who is “different”
- The child should be encouraged. He or she should not be discriminated because of physical or mental handicaps or advantages. If his or her IQ level is very high, then let the exceptional child take part in activities that would bring forth his or her talents
- One should take advantage of programs that are available for the exceptional child. Special academic courses are available for the child who is mentally and physically handicapped
- The functional skills and personal independence of the exceptional child should be enhanced. Several opportunities are available for the child to express his talents
Parents do have a responsibility in ensuring that the exceptional child is well taken care of at school and at home. He or she should not be made to feel inferior. Facilities are available for the exceptional child to develop mentally and physically.
