Children who spend a lot of time in a day care center suffer from behavior disorders. Getting into fights, arguing a lot, being disobedient in school are some of the traits found in school going kids who had earlier attended a day care center. This was revealed in a study concerning childcare issues conducted by the National Institute of Health.

Emphasizing the quality of day care and parenting patterns, the study also observed that children who experienced better day care scored well at school as compared to those who received improper care at the day care center. Children who received adequate parental care also performed better.

Around 1, 364 children were observed in the study. The study further noted that those children who spent time in a day care center were more defiant and aggressive at school, even in kindergarten. Similar behavior pattern was observed among the fifth and sixth graders as well.

It was also observed that the quality of parental attention had an impact on the behavior of the child, more so than day care. Parental guidance and their genes did matter on how the child behaved at school. The study defined day care as care by another person apart from the mother, who spent around 10 hours a week with the child.

The peer group behavior patterns at the day care had a major influence on how the child exposed to such behavior behaved. Much attention should be given to the social and emotional development of the child. Merely focusing on the cognitive and academic development was not sufficient.
