Parents are often tired of their child’s behavior. A child loves to play pranks and picks up fights with other children. Sometimes, he or she just messes up the houses and refuses to listen to the parents. Many parents lose patience, particularly, those who are working. They resort to spanking and prefer to spank the child, when the child is in the wrong. Is this good or bad?
Is It Good to Spank the Child?
- Teachers are not permitted by law to spank a child, but no such law is there which prevents parents from spanking a child
- Physical violence against a child is not appreciated by society
- Child abuse is a major problem many countries are facing
- Adults are in better position to take out their frustrations on their child
- Many parents believe in “spare the rod and spoil the child” approach, although, socially conscious persons are not favoring this concept
- Children who are spanked grow up to be anxious and aggressive as compared to children who are exposed to other kinds of punishment. Of course, there are cultural variations to this view
- One should be careful that one does not spank a child for normal childhood behavior
- Some parents may use physical objects to express their anger
- Spanking can also be administered lovingly so that the children grow up to respect the parents
- Spanking results in antisocial behavior among the children who are exposed to it
- Spanked children suffer from low self-esteem and delinquency
- The American Academy of Pediatrics opposes spanking a child
- Spanking is a form of violence against the child
- Emotionally, also it is upsetting for a parent to beat the child
- Spanking indicates the powerlessness of the child
- It proves to be an obstacle to effective communication
- A child feels threatened and may fear the parent
Spanking does appear to be a socially unacceptable way of disciplining the child. A child may hesitate to be frank and open with his or her parent. The child may be less spontaneous.
