Children who go to a day care center or playgroup are at 30% less risk of developing a life threatening cancer. This was observed in study conducted by Professor of epidemiology at the University of California, Patricia Buffler.
Researchers are of the view that children who interact with their peer group are exposed to several infections. This develops a strong immune system among them, which is able to fight the onset of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer.
The study, involving 20,000 children claims that children exposed to common infections early in life were protected from the cancer. Children are vulnerable to infections in day care centers as they come across, many children.
It was felt that in case the immune system was not challenged early in life, and does not develop in the normal way, it could have inappropriate responses to infections faced later in life, which includes developing cancer. There is a link between infections and cancer
