Parents would prefer to have their child at home. Working parents do face the problem of where to leave the child, whether at home or at a day care center. The comfort of a home cannot be felt in a day care center. A home is after all a home.
Authors, K. Alison Clarke Stewart, Christian P. Gruber, Linda May Fitzerald in “Children at Home and Day Care” hold the view that home child care provides the child with a secure environment and personal attention. The parent can regulate the behavior of the care taker. The question that arises is why should one prefer to have home childcare?
Why Home Childcare?
- An au pair can take care of the child at home. An au pair is generally a person between 17-30 years who stays with the family while attending school or just visiting the country. The au pair will be provided with food and boarding and will take care of the child at stipulated timings. If one can afford this then one can have the child well taken care of at home itself
- Nursing home care is also available, where nurses based in hospitals provide both physical and emotional care for the child
- One can have a nanny, an adult care provider, taking care of the child. Even middle class families can afford to have nannies. If you are assured that your child is in the hands of a responsible person, you feel less stressed if you are held up in traffic or at work
- A babysitter can be of much help also. One can have a long-term arrangement with a babysitter
- One can be personally in touch with the care provider. One can choose a person of one’s choice and request the person to work according to one’s instructions
- The person chosen becomes part of the family. One must a choose home care provider who respects the values and tradition of the respective family she is working for
Steven P. Shelov and Robert E Hannemann, in “ Caring for your Baby and Young Child- from birth to age 5” hold the view that one should have a home care provider who is right for the child and your style of rearing the child. One must checkout on her approach to discipline, feeding and scheduling. Obviously, home care for the child does appear to be a convenient option for the child.
