Video games are popular with children of all ages regardless of their origin and race. Over 1/3rd of American homes have computer game systems connected to their TV sets. Children prefer Videogames to TV because they are more interactive and more entertaining as well.
There are certain benefits of Video games such as –
- They improve children’s visual perception
- They allow the use of their imagination
- The promote attention with the use of strategies, sequencing and memorizing.
- They provide entertainment that can be shared by children and elders alike.
Like the saying goes – ‘Too much of anything is too bad’, video games’ disadvantages outweigh their advantages. Here are certain drawbacks of video games that you might want to consider before you buy your kid a brand new portable game system.
- Playing video games can take the maximum of your child’s time including the leisure and study time.
- Most kids pursue video gaming as a solitary activity this affects the child’s social and interactive skills with friends and family.
- Some games are violent and end up teaching the acceptance of violent behavior in real life too.
- Children resort to video games as an escape mechanism. They can unplug the world and all their problems once they plug in their video game.
How to prevent video games from wreaking havoc on your child’s developmental skills –
- Take a stand on video games – Since the child wont set his own limits, you need to set appropriate limits for your child and his playing of video games.
- You allot a specific time in the day for your child to play the video game. You could allow an hour play after your child has finished homework every day.
- Don’t allow your children to extend their deadlines just because they want to finish the game. When the deadline is near, remind your child so that he puts the computer game off just in time.
- Monitor the child’s video game, do not allow him to play excessively violent games.
- Make use of educational games available.
- Involve your children in other activities to help them make a productive use of their leisure.
Video games are not at all bad for your child, if only he uses it in moderation while doing all his other activities.
