Teachers always insist parents to encourage reading in children. Colorful and educative books should always be a part of after school activities, summer or winter holidays, leisure hours and any outdoor activity whether organized by the school or by parents and family.
Reading habits during non-school hours, helps children to prepare themselves for a routine or back-to-school mode. So, reading encourages quick learning and at the same time widens a child’s worldview.
Older kids have developed a passion for reading at odd hours before or during bedtime and continue to do so till late in the night. Plan a routine reading schedule on a daily basis, so that kids don’t stay up late and spoil their sleeping patterns.
Younger kids on the other hand, love to be told stories before they are about to sleep. Parents should read out interesting stories to their kids so as to prepare them for a good nights sleep.
As a whole, parents should make reading fun for their kids. Here are some ways in which parents can foster the love for reading in their children.
Tips to make reading a fun and learning activity:
- Be adventurous and take your children out on a warm summer afternoon. Read by the lake or a stream and help your child to relate to his or her surroundings while you impart reading lessons to them.
- Try making your children develop an interest for stories which run in series. This will keep your kid interested in a particular story and thereby help him or her to develop the habit of reading.
- Set a routine for reading in your child’s daily schedule. For example, before breakfast or in the evening, after your child has completed his or her school homework.
- If you are planning a vacation, then create a pile of interesting and colorful books for your kids to engage in. This will keep them in touch with reading whether in the hotel room or at the poolside.
- Make reading a family activity. For example, if you are planning to get a new pet home, then ask your kids to read up books on pets and how to take care of them.
- Always take a feedback from your kids about what they read. This will help you keep a track of your child’s interests and at the same time give you the opportunity to pile up resources to encourage your child’s fondness for reading.
Parents should ensure that reading is fun and a time to look forward to. Preserve their interests by living their dreams through books.
