Childhood obesity is becoming a disturbing trend in recent times. Factors contributing to this peculiar trend can range from one to many, but it is the role of parents that can help in preventing this upward drift.
Overweight among teens is considered a genuine health problem today. Doctors and scientists are of the opinion that parents need to check the eating habits of their children and guide them through a healthy and balanced diet.
Why is childhood obesity a health problem?
- It leads to heart diseases caused due to high cholesterol levels and/or high blood pressure.
- It may also lead to type 2 diabetes.
- Childhood obesity causes asthma problems.
- Overweight causes sleeping disorders like sleep apnea.
- Finally, it leads to social discrimination.
These are the apparent health complications that children can face tomorrow, if they are not checked about their eating patterns. Experts are of the opinion that childhood obesity if not controlled can lead to obese adults.
Tips for parents to control overweight in children:
- Try providing a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, oats, cereals and juices to name a few.
- The idea is to balance the calories of food items and beverages that a child eats and drinks.
- Encourage games and physical activity to a great extent. Children need to be agile and active to avoid obesity.
Healthy eating habits: Parents can learn more about their children’s likes and dislikes by developing a healthy nutritional diet for them. This would involve, making their favorite but healthy dishes and encouraging calorie-free food items.
Tips to provide a healthy eating diet for your kids:
- Include grains, vegetables and fruits in their meals.
- Ensure that milk has low fat contents.
- To maintain protein levels, feed them with beans, lentils, meat, fish, etc.
- Always serve in normal quantities.
- Encourage your kids to have lots of water.
- Try reducing their fetish for sweet products and limit sweetened beverages or candies.
- Try keeping them away from sweet and fatty foods.
You would never want to see your kids face all the complexities caused due to unhealthy or incongruous eating. Give them the best to eat but in sizeable quantities. The aim to check overweight in children is to reduce the weight gain and not to curb their growth or development.
