Parents might often wonder how to teach their child the techniques of reading. For introducing a child to the world of books he must be introduced to the world of language. The more a child gets acquainted with language the faster it can learn how to read.
Here are a few tips to teach reading to your child.
- Communicate with your child from an early age. It should be familiar with the sound effects to begin with.
- Do not indulge in baby talks with your child. Rather talk like an adult. It will help the child to develop its vocabulary.
- Use proper names in front of the child. Call objects by their names. Children are avid learners and record everything they hear. The more words they hear the more their vocabulary grows.
- Make your little toddler talk to you and give the impression that you consider his/her opinion very seriously. Talk to your child about the day’s event and engage it in conversation.
- Play make-believe games with your child.
- Read books aloud to your child. Let him experience sounds, words, pictures and stories. Let him realize that sounds, words and pictures carry meaning with them.
- Always get books with pictures for your child. Pictures interest children and they get attracted towards books.
- Read your child’s favorite book to it again and again and encourage him/her to join you with whatever word he/she knows.
- Play rhyming games with your child. Encourage him/her to make chains of rhyming words such as take, make, lake, fake, cake etc.
The act of reading actually depends on the auditory system. Sounds play a vital role in introducing children with the world of language. Therefore, the more you engage your child in listening and speaking the faster it will acquire language and subsequently reading.
