Progeria stiffens the walls of arteries, restricting the flow of blood to heart and brain. This condition leads the child to cardiovascular abnormalities.
Treatment for Progeria:
Though Progeria is not a curable disease, regular cardiovascular check-ups help manage the progression of the disease. Sometimes coronary artery bypass surgery or dilation of cardiac arteries (angioplasty) is also suggested by the doctors to slow down the progression of the disease.
Commonly prescribed ways to manage Progeria:
- A low dose of aspirin daily might help prevent stroke and heart attack
- Joint stiffness and hip problems can be managed with physical and occupational therapy
- High-calorie dietary supplements might tackle the problem of weight loss and ensure adequate nutrition.
- In case of infants who feed poorly, feeding tubes can be used to give expressed breast milk
- For a child suffering from Progeria new teeth might start coming even before the baby teeth fall. In such cases extraction of primary teeth might help reduce dental problems for your child.
Having learnt that your child has Progeria, a disease that would bring several complications and a shortened life span, is really a tough situation to handle. Sharing your problem will surely help you deal with the situation in a much better way. There are support groups with parents of children suffering from such fatal disease. Take their help to cope with your difficult times.
