High Alert on Progeria (Part 3)

Posted on August 6, 2007 in latest news

How is Progeria Diagnosed?

There is no specific test to diagnose Progeria. Doctors confirm the disease by observing the symptoms and signs, such as hair loss and failure to grow. And these symptoms are not apparent till the age of 2. However, genetic testing can be used to find LMNA mutations at the first appearance of the symptoms.

Complications in Progeria:

Progeria develops severe atherosclerosis. In this state, walls of the arteries – blood vessels that carry nutrients and oxygen from the heart to the rest of the body – stiffen and restrict the flow of blood to heart and brain. This condition often leads the child to cardiovascular abnormalities and eventually early death.
