Progeria is one among the rare genetic disorders that effect children during the first two years of life. This disorder causes children to age rapidly and proves fatal for the child. The normal life expectancy of a child suffering from Progeria is 13 years. But some of the effected children may live lesser than 13 years and some might live longer till 30.
Though children with Progeria appear normal at birth, symptoms start appearing by the 6th month.
The symptoms include:
- Below average weight and height
- Physical appearance starts becoming abnormal – narrowed face and beaked nose
- Hair Loss (including eyelashes and eyebrows)
- Loose and aged looking skin
- Head too large for the body
- Prominent scalp veins
- Smaller lower jaw
- High-pitched voice
- Delayed tooth formation
- Stiff joints
- Hip dislocation
- Loss of body muscles
If you happen to find any of these symptoms in your child contact a pediatrician as quickly as possible.
