Babies are given supplement feeding once they are six months old. The transition from breast milk to supplement food is not easy for the baby. Mothers should show extra patience and care while planning for this transition.
Here are a few steps that mothers can follow to help their baby go through this transition very smoothly:
- Start feeding the baby expressed breast milk through a cup.
The process of express breast milk might not suit all mothers. If the breasts swell after the process, it is not advised to continue the process. In such a condition mothers can cup feed cow’s milk to the baby. But special precaution should be taken that the cow milk is boiled properly to kill the germs. Add equal amount of boiled water to the boiled milk and then feed the baby.
- Give the milk with a cup between regular breastfeeds. So that your baby gets used to taking supplement food with a cup.
- Once the baby gets accustomed to drinking milk in a cup, try replacing one breast milk feed by the one given with a cup.
- Slowly introduce the baby to proper breast milk substitute or semi-solid food. If you are using a commercial infant formula then be very sure how to prepare it. Breast milk substitutes should be fed by cup.
- If refrigeration is not available do not give the remaining contents in the cup to your kid again. Hygiene is extremely important while following baby’s food habits.
It might take a period of 2-3 days to 2- 3 weeks for babies to get accustomed to supplement feeding. But it is ensured that the baby will have a smooth way towards supplement food.
