When the talk is about music then there is hardly anyone who can not relate to it. Music follows you to the grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, places of worship and what not! You relax with music and also you concentrate more on work with music playing in your ears. Over all you grow with music!
It is but natural for parents to sing or hum while cradling the new born baby. What we don’t realize is that it is a natural way to get the baby’s brain connected to all levels of development – be it social, emotional, physical or cognitive.
Music serves as a catalyst for a child’s growth. The baby starts responding to music very early. They will sway, wing, and bob their heads with any familiar music. Music is very much related to the cultural, emotional and situational aspects of life. Whenever a baby hears a familiar tune, the baby feels connected to a certain emotion attached with it. And, that is why we feel that there is a certain memory attached with every piece of music.
Children start using ‘the music they know’ to – soothe, entertain and cheer themselves up. Thus it plays an important factor in the mental growth of a child’s brain. Teaching becomes very easy with music and children remember rhymes better than the lessons given to them (Remember the song “Hokey Pokey”).
Even physical development of a child depends a lot on music. Children respond best to music when it comes to physical activities. If music is used well the rhythm, time and co-ordination will come naturally to them.
Researchers are still learning how good music can prove to help in a child’s growth. So far it is widely known that music helps to improve math, memory and reading skills in children. Other useful aspects of music are yet to be discovered.
Experiment with music while communicating with your child, and be ready to surprise yourself by the creative side in your child.
