There is a huge volume of work done on children’s behavioral patterns. And, many research studies were also done on how various aspects like books, television, games and films influence a child’s behavior.
The hypothesis on which these research studies were done is - reading, watching or playing violent books, television and games respectively tend to get addictive, and in turn may make the child pro to violence.
Taking one of the above mentioned aspects - video games- votes were taken from top doctors in U.S on labeling excessive use of video games as an addiction. But many doctors claimed that there is not enough evidence to prove the addictiveness of video games.
AMA (American medical Association) agrees to the researchers’ point that children spend more than two hours a day on video games. This indirectly cuts down their physical playtime and over-exposes them to violence. But in consultation with APA (American Psychiatric Association), AMA came to a conclusion that the labeling of video games as addiction will need a long time research.
Dr. James Scully, medical director at the APA, says “Right now, ‘we don’t agree or disagree’ with the notion that video game overuse might be an addiction. As a diagnostic issue, it is going to be several years before we make a determination of that. It’s clearly something that we want to consider.”
But both the associations have said that it is the parents who have to limit their children from over-exposure to video games, especially the more violent ones. They have also suggested that children’s overall interactivity with - TV, computers and video games - should be limited to a total of two hours a day.
So, to help your child’s healthy mental and physical growth, you need to balance their playtime and extra curricular activities.
